In 1984, local residents rallied to protect six acres of leftover woodland bordered by Coulsdon Road, Rutherwick Rise and St David’s. Their action group secured the site for public use as a nature reserve.
Since the first volunteer session in October 2011, the Coppice has seen a remarkable transformation. Regular working mornings have cleared litter, reopened paths and steps, and removed large amounts of dead wood.
The Friends group meets on the second Saturday of each month at 10am (until midday) at the northern car park and always welcome new helpers. Gloves, litter‑pickers and bags are provided - please wear suitable clothing and bring tools if you can.
Volunteers are what keeps this little pocket of nature the special place it is so if you can spare some time then please join us.
What to Expect
The Coulsdon Coppice Friends Group is always looking for volunteers to help on our regular clean up days of the woodland.
Whether you want to get regularly involved with preserving Coulsdon Coppice or just want to come down for a couple of hours to help with a litter pick, any time that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Association of Croydon Conservation Societies
A small woodland, possibly ancient at the southern end, surrounded by houses. Also known as Bleakfield and Stoneyfield Shaw. There is a small open area in the centre with Plantains and Meadow Cranesbill.
Coulsdon Coppice is a small, dense, mixed woodland, primarily of ash but with some mature oaks that runs from St. David's Road through to Birchfield Close in Old Coulsdon. The Coppice is very much a local resource to spend some time alone with nature.
Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society
Leased from Croydon Council by London Wildlife Trust, this is a valuable local resource for wildlife. Steps lead down into a dell and a path runs through between trees and an open grassy space in the middle. Planted with a wide variety of trees and shrubs it is great for woodland birds such as woodpeckers and nuthatches.
